Break Through

Well-being in the Workplace

Breathing.  It’s easy

Breathing.  It’s easy, it’s automatic and it’s not something you’re likely to forget.  Right? So why is it when you’re stressed people often say, “Don’t forget to breathe”?  Do they think that really might happen?  Of course not.

However, did you know that the brain requires more oxygen than any other organ?  Without sufficient oxygen, we become mentally sluggish and filled with negative thoughts and depression.  And did you also know that when we’re stressed we breathe more shallowly?

In addition to stress, lack of oxygen has been linked to cancer, immune deficiencies, and heart disease.  So, what to do?  Breathe, of course.  Deeply.  Science shows that animals that breathe the deepest, live the longest.

So take a moment or two and breathe in deeply – through your nose – to the count of 4; then hold it to the count of 7.  Then release your breath very slowly while counting to 8.  The slow release is just as important as it gets rid of the body’s toxins.

So, why wait to be stressed, sick or depressed?  Just breathe!!
