Feeling Drained?

I recently attended an art gallery opening. I was enjoying the creative space and the company of good friends when an acquaintance came over to speak to me. I don’t know him very well, but enough to know that he is what I call an “Energy Vampire”. Remember Pig Pen from the old Charlie Brown cartoon strips? He always had a cloud of dust hovering around him. This acquaintance reminds me of Pig Pen … he sloughs off fear, sadness and worry, turning his energy field a hazy dirty brown.
People like this tend to gravitate to people with positive energy. Like a vampire, they suck out all the positive energy and leave people feeling empty and drained. When this person came over to me I immediately felt my mood shift and my energy level drop.
Do you know someone like this? Maybe you like this person on some level – and they suck you in to their vortex. But if you are paying attention to the clues your body is giving you, you know this isn’t someone you should spend very much time around. This person may be charming; you know they are lonely and your heart wants to help. But you know how draining it can be just to be in the same room with this person, much less have a conversation with them.
So what do you do? Do you have to ditch them from your life? Maybe so. It takes courage to do that. Or, maybe you are obligated to them in some way … it’s someone you work with, a member of your family … you have to find a way to stay connected.
So, how do you do it? If these people were real vampires you could use garlic or silver bullets. But, since they are not, you need a technique to protect yourself from being sucked dry. Imagine yourself in an eggshell type enclosure. It is transparent so you can see and hear everything around you and it is filled with light … a soothing and calming light. This enclosure is porous allowing love and peace to penetrate, yet strong enough to allow the negative energy to bounce off its surface.

Next time you find yourself in the company of an energy vampire … try this technique. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
